When Only the Charred are Left
Branch, acrylic, seed beads, wood base
16 x 1.75 x 1.75
2023

When Only the Charred are Left are small beaded trees that contemplate what remains. This piece is a branch of a tree that washed up on the shore-no longer connected to its source. I tediously cloaked the dead with beads. My work asks the question-What do we do when our earth is barren of trees? My work is speaking to that possibility. I do not give any answers, I only give the possibility.

My work has always been connected to nature with a focus on the forces of culture on the living. As of late, I have been concerned with the fires that are destroying our forests. In a forest are individual trees- like society we tend to not see the single within the mass. I have always been interested in the individual uniqueness of the single. Trees are a metaphor for humans in my work. This piece, When Only the Charred are Left, is a branch that lost its source.
