Ghost Trees (2024)
Fabric, paint
7 - 10" wide x 9-12 feet long, 20 pieces.
I am an interdisciplinary artist based in the Hudson Valley area of New York state, United States. My focus is on sculpture. I take nature as my point of departure. I imagine a future where nature increases its range and power, to the extent of conquering humans, who willingly defer to it. Nature has become hyper-resilient; it may present as a hybrid of flora and fauna, an energetic ancestral sap, or anthropomorphic and otherworldly . My creations stand ready to reanimate and restore what has been lost.
Regarding my current project, and proposal:
White Birch Trees have become very important to me, as they become more scarce with time.
My Ghost Trees are made of painted strips of translucent fabric. They hang at intervals in my art space Ether Park, a section of natural forest I own in Kingston NY.
The trees are ethereal, existing on a different plane than our present reality. This reflects my ideas about nature and sentience; an animistic view that nature contains spirit.
I want to raise awareness about the environment and inspire a call to action. I have seen the positive effects of this awareness over time. I strongly believe in the power of art to create positive social change.
