Burned Root
Sculpture of handmade paper, twigs, charcoal, dried on mulberry tree root
14 x 8 x 6 inches
2024
This artwork was literally formed on the roots of the mulberry tree in my front yard, and the handmade paper embossed with the root bark patterns was removed when dry to put together with downed branches from the tree and embellished with charcoal, burning (controlled with fire retardant) and holes in the handmade paper created with rain and dew and fire.
Sitka Spruce Forest
Cast Handmade Pepr Sculpture Instalallation
7 units each about 7-10 ft. x 1 ft. x 4 inches
2015
This installation was inspired by my experience as an artist in residence at Sitka Center for Art & Ecology on the central Oregon coast where I first saw Sitka Spruce trees. I captured the bark patterns of these iconic trees by drying my handmade paper directly on the bark of living trees in the forest and then taking it back to the studio to connect into tall suspended tree forms.
