This series, Souvenir, is painted on a variety of wood slices. They are a nod to the history and popularity of souvenir mementos from the 1940’s and 1950’s purchased by travelers as keepsakes of their road trips. With that in mind, I decided to create my own mementos as contemporary versions of those once popular objects. I’m focused on portraits depicting both the natural and industrial landscape, as well as the resident wildlife whose habitats shrink as this landscape evolves. My hope is that these images remind us that, whether relegated to history or memory, all are to be reckoned with as the environment continues to change.

The wood is sourced from as far afield as Ireland (rowan wood), New Hampshire and Wyoming (birch, aspen and olive wood), a friend’s Jacaranda tree . . . and my neighbor’s 200-year-old oak slabs, when dry and ready for paint in a few years.
