I am drawn to and collect things that once held life – seed pods, husks, skin and bones, wool, plant fibers. In my art practice I felt, dye, stitch, and otherwise assemble these elements to create sculptures that express my emotional experiences.
My explorations have been focused in three primary areas:
Ancestors – figures intended to evoke a sense of our shared ancestry – the energy/spirit that moves through us all from way back and continues endlessly forward.
Safe Places – cradles, nests, boats. How we find them for ourselves, how we hold each other.
Wounds – cracking open and learning to honor the beauty of pain. How do we heal?
I am attracted to impermanence, fragility, the way things fall apart, and what remains.
I grew up in a family of art lovers and was graced with a lifelong immersion in the visual, performing, and literary arts.
I have worked as a jeweler; gallery director; graphic designer; publisher; community activist; and partner in a landscape design/install company. In 2010 I began making large-scale installations with paper, twine, concrete, found objects, and textiles. I live and work in Oakland, California.
